Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Body-Con Dresses, Interesting Hemlines and Cleavage-Grazing Earrings

body-con dresses, long earringsJordan Strauss/Invision/AP; Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic; Steve Granitz/WireImage

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we noticed several stars flaunting their curves in second-skin stunners and selecting dresses with out-of-the-box hemlines. Plus, we spotted one celeb playing a game of “Earrings vs. Décolletage,” and we’re pretty sure she lost.

Up: Body-con dresses. Our idea of a summer dress is long, flowy, easy, breezy … you get the point. But apparently, when you’re out in Hollywood, body-con is the way to go — this week, anyway. Britney Spears led the pack in her blue bandage dress, coordinating with the carpet at The Smurfs 2 premiere. Then there were the Victoria’s Secret angels Karlie Kloss and Behati Prinsloo who stunned in their berry-colored minis at an event for the brand in N.Y.C. Rounding out the bevy of beauties in body-con, Sharon Stone proves the style has no age boundaries in her white head-turner.

Up: Unique Hemlines. If Diane Kruger is doing it, then you know it’s a thing. The actress selected a printed Mary Katrantzou dress with an asymmetrical hemline at the Fox All-Star party in West Hollywood Following in her fashion-forward footsteps were Emma Roberts in a high-low Michael Kors gown, Amanda Seyfried in this ruffle-trim Givenchy number and Kate Upton’s upper-thigh baring LBD.

Down: Cleavage-grazing earrings. Questionable cleavage has emerged as a red carpet accessory this week. But the accessory we’re really confused by is Tyra Banks‘s mile-long tassel earrings that dangle all the way to her décolletage. And while stars aren’t going to stop showing their curves, we’re pretty sure Tyra’s out-there look will not become a craze anytime soon.

Christy Turlington’s Calvin Klein Commercial Is the Latest In a Series of Confusing Celeb Ads

$

You’ve seen Christy Turlington’s seriously jaw-dropping print ads for Calvin Klein. Well, now there’s a video component, and it makes us wonder if maybe the ads were better off being silently sexy.

“Clothes tell a story. Sometimes it’s true. Sometimes it’s what you want people to think, but this says what I really feel,” she says, writhing in her barely-there Calvin Klein undies. “It’s not a secret. Just personal. You might be surprised. Just between you and me.”

Anyone else scratching their heads?

Turlington’s commercial is just the latest in a series of celeb ads that seem less designed to sell a product than to project an air of mystery and, well, confusion.

Brad Pitt‘s ad for Chanel No. 5 is so otherworldly that it inspired an SNL parody — though we think the ad has its own special brand of humor.

And Diane Kruger’s own Chanel ad similarly revels in hard-to-decipher aphorism.s “I believe in beauty even with the eyes closed,” she intones over videos of her driving and chasing birds on a beach. “Beauty isn’t sought, it’s revealed.”

Tell us: Are you loving these philosophical ads, or would you rather just see (and not hear) these celebs pitch their wares?

We have three fun looks that will take you from a flirty date to a three-mimosa brunch to a Powerpoint presentation with minimal effort. You can’t miss with any of them — we may just try all three!

Diane Kruger striped shirt
AKM-GSI

Saturday night: Diane Kruger manages to take boyfriend jeans to a date-night-appropriate level. How? With a killer pair of heels, chic striped top and red cross-body bag. And since guys are always gushing about how they love a girl in jeans, take a cue from the actress and give the LBD a rest for a more laid-back look.

Nab a pair of Diane’s exact Blank NYC jeans for $88, or check out the Express jean sale (we’re loving this ankle-rolled pair). Complete the look with a striped top like this one from Forever 21 (only $12.80!) and embellished heels like this Jeffrey Campbell pair on sale for $49.95.

Olivia Wilde maxi
Splash News Online

Sunday brunch: What’s better to wear to brunch with your girls than a white, breezy maxi? A white, breezy maxi topped with a blue bomber jacket, of course. Yes, Olivia Wilde has shown us the way!

You probably already own a long white dress like Olivia’s, but if you’re late to the maxi party that’s okay! This crochet-trim sheath from ASOS is on sale, and a great thing to add to your collection. On the leather jacket front, this blue DKNY one (yes, it’s faux) is a pretty close match, and half the price of the actress’s MIH topper!

Lily Colins white dress
Splash News Online

Monday morning: Lily Collins looks so demure in this white, fit-and-flare Valentino dress, we can’t believe she’s the same actress who wore this belly button-baring look…in the same week! But we’ll save that for a whole different story.

We liked her feminine white dress so much, we decided to use it as our inspiration for a Monday morning outfit. And this Dolce Vita eyelet-trim frock is giving us the same vibe. Pair with your go-to wedges or metallic sandals and you’ll be starting off your week on a fashion-forward note.

Tell us: Which outfit(s) will you try this weekend?

Diane Kruger On Beauty, Aging and Hating the Gym

Our style crush on Diane Kruger is no joke — and it’s no secret either. There aren’t many people who could make us want to try formal jerseys, overalls and whatever you’d call this, but somehow she manages to make even the trickiest trends look effortlessly cool.

So when she talks beauty and fashion, we get out our spiral notebooks and pens and take notice. DuJour magazine‘s August cover star got personal about her feelings on those subjects — and the mag nabbed some gorgeous behind-the-scenes shots from her Chanel skincare ads to accompany the interview.

RELATED PHOTOS: See more stars with styles we’re obsessed with in Love Her Outfit!

As it turns out, Kruger’s relationship with Chanel goes way, way back — and beyond just being a perfect mannequin for the house’s designs. “I’ve had a bond with the house since I was 15. My first shoot as a model was for [designer] Karl Lagerfeld!” she says. “I immediately fell under the charm of his kindness and his sense of humor, and, of course, our German roots brought us closer.”

And though she’s been modeling since she was a teenager, Kruger says that she’s more comfortable with her looks now than ever before. “I would say that I’m kinder to myself,” she says. “Even though I loved being 20, I’m not nostalgic about my beauty at that time … If I’m happier now, then I’m more beautiful than I was before.”

She prefers to enhance that beauty herself, she tells DuJour: “I prefer to do my own makeup. I want above all to look like myself. Feeling beautiful is a private emotion [and] this helps me put things in perspective, accept myself as I am.” And though she’s religious about her skincare routine to keep herself looking gorgeous, she does admit that there’s one thing she does let go: Her fitness routine. “I’m not really athletic. I hate going to the gym. Exercising only makes sense if I get pleasure out of it. But pleasure comes from real life, not from staying in a bubble.”

Okay, we’re ready to order the “Diane Kruger Non-Bubble Workout Video” if that means we’ll be any closer to achieving her signature look! For more from the star, check out her interview with DuJour, and tell us: What do you think of her skincare and exercise mantras?

This Week’s Best Dress Is Just. So. Pretty.

There are weeks where we are totally surprised by your choice for Best Dressed Star. Maybe the dress was a little out there, or perhaps there’s someone else who was just so good that we can’t believe they didn’t win. This is not one of those weeks.

RELATED: See the other stars in this week’s Top 10 Best Dressed!

Diane Kruger absolutely deserved her runaway “Best Dressed” victory in this exquisite Valentino Couture gown, worn to the designer’s Venice ball. Her blush pink, embroidered and beaded dress had shades of Grace Kelly (as does the willowly blonde herself!).

But true to fashionista form, Kruger updated the classic look with loose locks and a fuchsia clutch — and took full advantage of its sheer pockets — to make the elegant work of art look as easy to wear as a pair of jeans.

So tell us: Do you think Kruger deserved this week’s top spot? If not, are you nuts? We mean, if not, who did?

Did Diane Kruger Have a Wardrobe Malfunction?

Quick: Name a time Diane Kruger has looked anything less than flawless on the red carpet. It’s hard to do, right?

Which is why PEOPLE StyleWatch editors were left feeling confused and adrift when, while selecting photos for Last Night’s Look, they spotted what appeared to be Diane Kruger’s silicone “chicken cutlets” peeking out of her off-the-shoulder red satin dress. Could our most reliable red carpet style star have suffered such a major wardrobe malfunction? What did this mean for our fantasy fashionista draft?

RELATED: Obsessed or hot mess? Vote in our gallery here!

That’s when we decided we had to go to the tape — referencing the dress itself against the original one that hit the Jonathan Saunders runway in the spring. And we were relieved (we think) to see that she was wearing it as it was presented on the runway, exposed, nude-hued bustier construction and all.

Did you have the same double-take we did? And what do you think of the “chicken cutlet” look — is it sexy or silly?

What Was Diane Kruger's Most Recent Splurge? Who Loves Target Lingerie? The Stars Dished at the Peter Pilotto Event

Peter Pilotto for TargetCourtesy Target

You’re not the only one who can’t wait to get her hands on Target’s designer collaborations; celebs line up to get their hands on the coveted pieces too. And the latest collection, which featured Peter Pilotto‘s signature allover prints, was no exception. From left, Diane Kruger, Taylor Schilling and actress Dree Hemingway were among the stars who turned up to fête the launch Thursday.

And (also like you) all the celebs copped to having a major Target addiction. Kruger said “All house supplies are Target purchases for me,” while Hemingway confessed, “I love Target. I’m obsessed with their lingerie. I think my first pair of sexy panties were from Target. They have great shoes that are affordable.”

RELATED PHOTOS: It cost how much?! Totally affordable star bargains!

All three stars also admitted that they’d made a few major purchases recently too. Schilling treated herself to a leather jacket — “But in my opinion a leather jacket is a staple item that I’ll wear forever!” — while Hemingway just got a great coat. “It’s Céline. It was right before Christmas when I was supposed to be shopping for everyone else. I was caught up thinking I need this. It’s a forest green, beautiful cashmere jacket. I’m wearing it tonight!” she said.

For her part, Kruger told PEOPLE she’d just spent big on “this ear cuff from Jacquie Aiche online. I’m still feeling a little guilty about it.” However, she remained mum on another buzzworthy piece of jewelry — a sparkling ring she’s been wearing on her left ring finger recently. But she did share a piece of advice for her longtime love Joshua Jackson before Feb. 14 rolls around: “I just say have fun. I feel like the pressure of it just kills the atmosphere. And I don’t want to get chocolate ever again from a guy on Valentine’s Day. Think outside the box, boys!”

Best Dressed of the Week: All Reese Witherspoon Needs Is an LBD to Take Out the Competition

Reese Witherspoon best dressedTheo Wargo/Getty

PEOPLE.com readers really can’t resist a good LBD. Proof: This week’s best dressed star. Reese Witherspoon trumped two celebs in floor-skimming gowns for the title, and we’re not sure how we feel about it.

Don’t get us wrong: The actress looks amazing in the long-sleeve Valentino design (worn to the Great American Songbook event in N.Y.C.) featuring an on-trend scalloped neckline. Our favorite part of the look is her textured waves and sexy smoky eye, but in general we felt it was a safe move for the star who earned close to 23,000 “Love It Votes” (a 90 percent approval rating!) to beat out the competition.

Trailing Witherspoon’s stylish footsteps, Elizabeth Hurley nabbed the No. 2 spot in a slinky dove-gray halter with interlocking rings at the neckline at the London Royal Portrait Gallery event. She completed her glam look with a white fur coat and earned an 81 percent “Love It” rating from readers. And rounding out the top 3 was our personal favorite this week, Diane Kruger, who stunned in a white Elie Saab gown with a sheer skirt at the Better Angels premiere in Berlin.

Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Snakeskin, Collared Dresses and the Need for a Fresh New Neckline

Trend report: snakeskin, collared dressesAngela Weiss/Getty (2); Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we saw serpentine style, crisp collars and a neckline that’s just not picking up steam.

Up: Snakeskin. This look has been slithering its way onto the red carpet these past couple weeks, and our leading ladies are finding many different approaches to wearing the material. Nikki Reed (left) sports a cream sheath embossed in the glam print. Amy Adams also steps out in the style (literally) with a pair of nude python Christian Louboutin pumps while Kate Hudson wears an snakeprint white leather mini. Ashley Greene put our black skinnies to shame in her leather RTA ones – which were also, of course, on-trend.

Up: Collared Dresses. If you frequent our Last Night’s Look gallery, you’re well aware that the stars love menswear inspired fashion. This week, these looks caught our eye. Diane Kruger (center) coordinates with rumored fiancé Joshua Jackson in a gray collared dress. Nikki Reed not only modeled the snakeskin trend but this one as well — her stylist must own a crystal ball. Eva Mendes rocks the style in her polka dot shift while Kate Mara opts for a Peter Pan collar instead of the traditional pointed tips.

Down: Super-high Necklines. With spring right around the corner (we hope), it’s nearly time to put away the turtlenecks and flaunt a little décolletage. Though we love this embellished version on Eva Longoria, we’re betting fewer people will be covering up on the red carpet in coming weeks. Though it could still pop up here or there — we had a big debate over it in our Oscars gown prediction video — we don’t think the stars want to be stifling on the red carpet.

Hollywood's Mint Moment: See Four Celeb Takes on the Pastel Hue

It might not feel like spring in NYC, but editors are pretty close to boycotting their boots and tights for the rest of the season. We’ve been bookmarking pieces for our warm-weather wardrobes for a while now (in hopes of willing the nice weather to happen), but one thing has just been added to the top of our must-haves list: a mint-colored piece of clothing.

Brad Pitt styleGetty; Splash News Online (2); Rex USA/span>

The pastel hue was hot on the Spring 2014 runways (see Phillip Lim, DKNY and Prabal Gurung) and now it’s been spotted on a number of fashion-forward stars.

From right, Diane Kruger teamed a mint Rebecca Minkoff dress from the designer’s Spring 2014 collection (which featured voluminous sleeves) with floral printed Peter Pilotto for Target slip-ons (still available and on sale if you want to nab a pair) while running errands in L.A. Next up, Rihanna selected a coordinating crop top (naturally) and mini skirt in the perfect pastel shade for an outing in New York earlier this week.

Across the pond, Pippa Middleton chose a satin coat dress for a friend’s wedding, sticking with the allover green theme by adding olive accessories. And lastly Rita Ora (pictured in NYC) went for the most unique ensemble in tweed cropped trousers and a wrap sweater (both Acne Studios) featuring a mint-green swirl print.

What do you think of the pastel trend? Will you be adding some mint pieces to your wardrobe? Share your thoughts below.

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson: The History of a Met Gala Power Couple

If the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala crowned a King and Queen each year, Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson definitely would have nabbed top honors (probably more than once). The couple has become a red carpet staple at the annual fashion fête, and seeing them is always a highlight for PeopleStyleWatch.com editors. (Note: If these two ever break up, we’re quitting life and retiring to our beds with unlimited Netflix and Cheetos.) Before the fashion-forward duo have what’s bound to be a repeat glam performance tonight, here’s a look back at their best moments from Met Gala’s past.

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson Met GalaBEImages; Getty (2)

It all started in 2008, when Kruger skipped the floor-skimming gowns for a silver Alberta Ferretti cocktail dress featuring sequin embellishment on the shoulder. Jackson complemented his leading lady in a white tuxedo jacket and coordinating pants, also Alberta Ferretti. In 2009, the German actress went short once again in a white Chanel Couture mini with floral appliqués. And she didn’t walk the carpet with Karl Lagerfeld; instead, Jackson served as her her arm candy, looking dapper as ever in a classic tux. For their third straight Met Gala appearance, Kruger selected a simple, sleek white Calvin Klein gown, and Jackson ditched the bow tie for a scarf.

RELATED: Better from the back? See the most memorable Met Gala dresses from every angle

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson Met GalaBEI Images, Getty

The couple’s most high-fashion moment came in 2011, when Kruger chose a nude embellished top and black skirt from one of her favorite designers, Jason Wu. Jackson selected a Dior Homme suit with white piping around the lapel. Then for last year’s party, the star selected a sheer, lace Chanel Couture dress and dip-dyed the end of her ponytail pink to match the Punk theme. Jackson didn’t rock any Billy Idol plaid, but he did mix it up pairing a red tie with his Dior Homme suit.

Sure Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West and more stylish couples give us red carpet butterflies, but there is something just so freakin’ cute about Josh and Diane. Do you agree? Tell us: Are you excited to see the couple tonight? Any bets on what they’ll be wearing?

How was your Memorial Day weekend? What did you wear? (Surely Kim wasn’t the only one wearing white!) Did you bust out the bikini, hit the trails in your finest yoga pants or finally debut your prettiest new sundress?

Celebs wrestled with these big existential questions as well, and for the most part, the answer was “bikinis with a side of stylish summer attire.” Above, the celebrity attendees at producer Joel Silver’s annual Memorial Day barbeque turned it out in predictably cool fashion. Diane Kruger (far left) wore a trompe l’oeil graphic-print shift and lace-up sandals; Kate Beckinsale wore an incredibly crisp and chic white romper with mirrored silver pumps; Kaley Cuoco used one of our favorite transitional wardrobe tricks by topping a maxi with a leather jacket; and January Jones wore a sweet print midi dress with cap sleeves, plus a straw sun hat and fresh-feeling hoops.

Hot in Hollywood: Stars Say 'Oui' to French-Inspired Tees

French-inspired celeb teesFameFlynet; Ramey; FameFlynet

If you’ve already embraced and forgotten the famous person face t-shirt style that was trending last month, you’ve probably been wondering what the next hot ticket tee would be — and it’s finally here. Some of our favorite leading ladies have been spotted in shirts that are très chic (bien sûr!).

Kate Beckinsale was spotted leaving the grocery store this weekend sporting a Zoe Karssen ‘Au Revoir Mon Cheri’ tee with a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans, white strappy sandals and a quilted bag. Diane Kruger was also showing some Paris love with the city’s name printed across her Madewell top while out and about in L.A.

Instagram Photo

And then there are the greetings tees — Fashion Faceoff one saying hello, the other, goodbye, all en Francais. Alessandra Ambrosio (above) wore a grey AIKO Giacomo sweatshirt that reads, “Au Revoir Tokyo” (which you can still get here). Ashley Tisdale posted a selfie on Instagram in another top by the samedesigner with “Bonjour Los Angeles” printed across the front.

Loving this look? We found a couple budget-friendly options so you can rock the trend just like the stars! If you’re going for the slouchy-tee style like Beckinsale and Kruger, we think you’ll be looking très cool in this loose soft-pink piece or this “La Nouvelle Belle” white jersey top (we even found a dress version). But if you’re more inclined go to the long-sleeve route, we recommend this sweatshirt that reads, “You. Me. Oui.”

Printed tees are nothing new, but these designs feel a bit trendier (maybe it’s because we love adding a French twist to our outfits). Which celeb had your favorite message? What would your shirt read?

You think you’re a “Last Night’s Look: Love It or Leave It” addict? Best/worst dressed 2014Michel Dufour/WireImage; Joe Stevens/ Retna Ltd.;

Love It: Diane Kruger’s Swan Trench Coat. It’s a trench coat. And it has swans on the collar. I can’t believe I have to justify my love for this any more. Quirky, cute and classic all at the time, it’s the trench of my dreams, and I’ll even forgive Diane for the clunky black shoes (in my dream wardrobe, this dress is only paired with elegant high heels). –Alex Apatoff, Senior Style Editor

See all the latest from the red carpet here!

Love It: Renée Zellweger’s Pop of Color.Leave it to Renée to disappear from the red carpet circuit for many, many moons, then surface looking better than ever. Much to my delight, she was red-hot at a luncheon this week honoring her friend Carolina Herrera, who designed this stunning number (probably with the actress in mind, considering it looks like it was made for her). From the bright tomato-red shade to the kimono sleeves and skinny belt, every element highlights the star’s best features — those being her glowing skin and amazing figure, of course. Pairing the vibrant dress with striped Christian Louboutin pumps and not a drop of bling was a totally chic and refreshing move from the red carpet vet, which is exactly why I’d love for her to stick around. –- Jackie Fields, Beauty Writer

Leave It: Elizabeth Hurley’s Furry Accessory. Sure, we all have fall wardrobes on the brain, but it’s a bit early to be whipping out the fur. The star’s wintry stole feels off balance from her ruched LWD. Plus, with all those dripping diamonds it feels very ’90s soap opera star, not 2014 glam. –Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor

Shimmery Eye Shadow
If you’re all about the glitter and glitz for the holiday, then a shimmery eye shadow, like Lambert’s from the American Country Countdown Awards, is the perfect NYE look for you. Just coat your favorite copper shadow on your lids for a smoky-eye effect. Then, to really make your eyes pop (like Lambert’s blue beauties), brush on some silver shadow in the inner corners and skim a brown eyeliner on the lower lash line. Then Brush on a couple of coats of mascara, and you’re good to go!

Exaggerated Cat Eye
Cat-eye liner is a universal makeup trick that looks great on just about everyone. But the exaggerated version? Well, it’s a little harder to apply during the day, but it’s the perfect look for a party-filled night. Kruger’s take on the trendy liner look is easy to replicate at home. First, follow our easy six-step tutorial on nailing the winged liner look, then simply repeat the process over again slightly above the first winged line. Within minutes you’ll have a bolder, darker cat eye to pair with your sparkly New Year’s Eve dress!

Bright, Bold Lip
Ladies, leave the lip gloss at home tonight, and instead opt for a darker, richer hue, like Blunt’s. Just add a swipe of your favorite dark lip stain (red, wine, plum, etc.) to your pout before heading out to pair with your winged-out liner or shimmery eyes for a pop of color and a whole lot of glam!

Blunt has been making the rounds on her Into the Woods promo tour wearing gorgeous designer dresses (see this floral Dolce & Gabbana frock and this sunshine yellow two-piece Zuhair Murad number). But our favorite recent look from the star was on she wore off the carpet: a casual knit sweater dress from Ann Taylor. And you might want to hurry if you plan to nab the look for yourself — it’s on sale!

Kruger is another stylish star we’d like to swap closets with, but for now, we’ll start by adding her super-warm Wilfred “Diamond Mosaic” blanket scarf (which she wore while out and about with her beau Joshua Jackson in Aspen) to our shopping carts. Get your own for $85 online or at your local Aritzia store to help keep you warm this winter.

Like Blunt, Kendrick has been busy jet-setting all over the country promoting her role as Cinderella in Into the Woods, and the actress has been giving us some serious airport style envy in between her appearances. One example? This chic purple Heartloom “Jolie” pullover. Paired with jeans, booties and a wide-brim hat, it’s a look we all can easily replicate from home. Start by picking up her $94 sweater. (We bet it will become an instant cold-weather staple.)

And finally, for anyone who loves the graphic sweater trend, you’ll want to pick up Justice’s adorable owl crewneck from French Connection to layer with a button-down and skinnies. Or, if you’re feeling brave (or live somewhere warm), pair it with a midi skirt and heels for an office-appropriate look.

Don’t you love a good deal? Will you be adding any of these affordable finds to your virtual cart? If so, which one?
